The primary function of the Ministry & Nurture committee is to foster and strengthen the spiritual life of the meeting, including pastoral care, the responsibility to watch over, encourage and develop the care of individuals for each other and their relationship with the meeting. The first responsibility of members of this committee is to deepen their own spiritual lives, being faithful in worship and sensitive to the life of the Spirit. The second responsibility is using good judgment; helping others find clearness for personal struggles, or to reconcile differences that may occur within the meeting. When asked, the committee will help those who seek to become sensitive to divine prompting. The third responsibility is to listen, both to others in the meeting and to the wisdom of the Spirit. Listening for discomfort with the quality of vocal ministry and lovingly offer guidance to those who speak, when necessary. Also, to listen to the needs of the community, providing opportunities for the religious education of all who attend the meeting, to share their experience and search for insight.
The care of others in the meeting begins with the greeting of newcomers. The committee is responsible for arranging for greeters from among the members. Greeters signal the rise of Meeting for Worship and allowing for introductions. The committee obtains and circulates appropriate literature. They are responsible for maintaining contact with all members and attenders in a spirit of affectionate interest. Providing for religious education in the form of retreats, study groups, and spiritual sharing; encouraging as many as possible to attend Southeastern Yearly Meeting functions also falls within the responsibility of the committee. They concern themselves with membership by recommending action upon requests for membership, transfer and withdrawal of membership, and requests to be married under the care of the meeting.
Along with the membership recorder and the treasurer, the committee is responsible for deciding on an accurate list of members and attenders sent to Southeastern Yearly meeting. The committee is responsible for contacting non-resident members to encourage them to transfer their membership or lay their membership down. The committee is responsible for overseeing the memorial meeting of a deceased member. Writing a memorial minute about that person’s life and contributions to the life of the meeting is our final gift to the member.
